KHIVA/NUKUS – MOYNAQ (the old port city of the Aral Sea)
Start your Aral Sea Travel from your hotel with a private, experienced driver. The drive to the Ship Cemetery of Moynaq goes through small villages and towns, the wild landscapes of the steppes of Ustyurt, the river of the Amu Darya, and the views of several 3000-year old antique citadels. Small typical houses made of clay, nomadic yurts, camels along the road are very characteristic for the region.
You will arrive in Muynaq Aral Sea by midday. On arrival in Muynaq, you will be transferred to the observation area from where you can see the Aral Sea Ship Graveyard. The observation area has images and maps of the Aral Sea from the last 70 years. There is also a small café where you can have a drink.
You will have free time to come closer and to see the ships in the desert of the Aral Sea.
After visiting all ships of the Moynaq Ship Graveyard, you can also visit the new museum of the history of the Aral Sea.
After visits, you can have lunch in a small restaurant in the town.
Tip: Before leaving the city of Muynaq, we recommend you to make a short drive into the old streets of Muynaq where you will old, typical houses painted in white which gives you an impression that you are in the Muynaq of the 70s.
After the visits in the city, you will return to Khiva/Nukus. On the road to Nukus/Khiva, you will visit a very rare Zoroastrian site in Uzbekistan – the necropolis Mizdakhan. Mizdakhan used to be an ancient citadel of the Khorezmian Empire and the ruins of the antique citadel are now covered with so many mausoleums of different epochs and different styles.
Continue the drive to Nukus/Khiva. You will be transferred to the destination of your choice: your hotel/airport/train station.
