In the beginning of the 20th century most of Khiva was already covered with a good number of monuments and in the center of the city there was only limited space for building new constructions. Due to that when Islam Khodja decided to build a minaret & a mosque (1908-1910years) he was obliged to build narrow but high buildings.

Even if the Minaret Islam Khodja was built in the beginning of the 20th century, it was erected following the forms and traditions of the oldest minarets of Khiva. After its construction the “Kalan” minaret of Bukhara has lost its status of being the highest minaret of the country. The height of the minaret is 57 meters. Travelers who want to reach the top of the minaret need to count some 120 steps inside the minaret.
